The Hella Mounted Patrol was started in 1957 by Nobles Otto Consolvo and Ernest Webber who used hand painted signs to identify themselves while riding horseback through the All-State Convention Parade in Fort Worth.  Two months later the Hella Mounted Patrol was formed and approved in November by the Potentate.  The Unit later changed its name to the Hella Black Horse Patrol.

The Patrol is dedicated to the ideal "We ride so crippled children can walk".  The Black Horse Patrol takes great pride in sponsoring circus tickets for the Special Education departments of several school districts, and sets up horseback rides for children in these groups.

The Black Horse Patrol entered its first International competition at the Imperial Council Session in Indianapolis in 1970 and came home with seven of the eight trophies awarded in that competition.

The Black Horse Patrol has been accorded the honor of participating in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California in 1971.  Of the many honors received by the Patrol none have been more rewarding than being invited to participate in four Presidential Inaugural Parades.  The first of which was President Richard Nixon's Inaugural Parade in Washington, DC.  Since that time, the Black Horse Patrol has ridden in the Inaugural Parades for Presidents Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and in the parade for President George W. Bush.

The Black Horse Patrol is made up of men from all walks of life, from doctors, politicians, business leaders, ranchers and many other occupations.  The members must pay their own way to competitions and performances and must buy their own horse, equipment, trailer, truck and other tack.

Starting with merely a group of men who enjoyed the pleasure of riding horseback together, the Black Horse Patrol has grown into an outstanding precision drill team of International acclaim.  Its endless list of achievements has brought accolades and invitations from all over the continent.
