| BOWLING LEAGUE
The year was 1941 - - - when Noble Ernest G. Hudel along with a handful of Nobles met to organize what is now the HELLA SHRINE BOWLING LEAGUE. Formed originally with eight teams at Hap Morris Bowl (downtown off Young Street), the League experienced steady growth, requiring a move to the larger Ross Lanes. When a fire destroyed the lanes, the League moved to Lakewood Lanes. It was during this time period that the League doubled in size, increasing the teams to sixteen. The League played at different bowling lanes, then in 1961 moved to the newly built Cotton Bowling Palace. This was also the year that saw the birth of the Stow-A-Ways League composed of wives of Shriners. The two Leagues since have been combined to form the mixed teams of Nobles and Ladies bowling on each team. The League opened its participation to Blue Lodge Masons and non-Masonic family members in 1996. Thus influencing new membership in both the Blue Lodge and Shrine. The League is now open to all Shriners, their Ladies, Master Masons and relatives. The 2002 League roster boasts 40 members. 1955 was a banner year for the League when it hosted the first Inter Shrine Bowling Tournament. There were four Shrines participating: Houston, New Orleans, Tulsa and Dallas. This event continued to grow in popularity. In 1980 and 1981, there was so much interest in the tournament that it attracted over 500 bowlers representing eleven Shrines from five states. At the Tournament in March of 1996, Noble J. D. Hall of Springfield, Missouri bowled the first 300 game. In 2002, Noble Gary Woodard (Midian Shrine) of Wichita, Kansas marked the second time in tournament history that a 300 game was bowled. The Tournament in 1994 marked the beginning of the tradition of contributing $1 per person per event to the Hospital Fund. An active unit, Hella Shrine Bowlers
regularly attend out of town tournaments encouraging support of the Shrine at a national
level. The International Tournament held in Las Vegas has been an annual event where over
50 teams competed. Come join us for fun and fellowship at
